TURBAN FAMILY
Weakly Bolting, Hardneck
Named for the turban shape of the umbel, Turbans are the first strains to sprout after planting, first to go to scape and are the first bulbs ready for harvest. Outer bulb wrappers have lush colourings of purples, cream white and tinges of browns. With marbling, blotching and striping of these colours these bulbs are visually stunning. The cloves usually range from light tan to satiny pink, are arranged in a single ring around the stem and normally average 7-10 cloves per bulb. Storage life can be anywhere from 6-8 months.
Plant structure:
Turbans are short plants with medium sized leaves that are spaced fairly far apart. Weakly bolting, the scapes occasionally won’t form and often don’t curl completely before the bulbs have matured. Umbel capsules are fairly short and filled with numerous small to medium sized bulbils.
Bulb size is often not affected if scapes are left on the plant.
Flavour Profile:
While the spice volume can vary from nearly muted to intense and brisk, the garlic levels are always warm and very present. With flavours that can be a little subdued (soft, subtle), these strains can be seen as the best for raw applications.
Storage Life:
Being the first to harvest these strains are the first to go off while in storage. Bulbs average 6 months, some strains have stored longer for us.
